Senator calls for ban on some Asian shrimp

Prompted by a report by the AFLCIO’s Solidarity Center alleging pervasive abuse of workers and destruction of the environment in the global shrimp-supply chain, Landrieu, D-La., wrote to President George Bush directly, seeking a ban on imports from Thailand and Bangladesh. "I urge you to immediately embargo imports of processed shrimp from Thailand and Bangladesh until the United States can conduct an investigation into recent allegations concerning gross labor abuses and sanitary conditions that could endanger the health of American consumers," Landrieu’s letter states. The document also recaps the Solidarity Center’s allegations of "physical and sexual abuse, child labor, human trafficking and despicably low wages."

"As gas prices go up, the impact reverberates through our entire economy," Landrieu said after signing the letter with four of her colleagues. "It not only hits American drivers at the pump, it increases manufacturing and transportation costs, which affect the price on almost every product we buy."
